The Alameda Gardens Dell is a main venue for weddings which are conducted between 1st April and 31st October. The Dell accommodates comfortably a small number of people and they welcome all ideas for making use of this unique exotic venue. This intimate, sub-tropical garden was designed by Guiseppe Codali, the head gardener and horticulturist of the Alameda during the end of the 19th Century, a Genoese who was brought to Gibraltar specifically to work in the gardens. His Italian influence can be seen in the terracing and general layout of this lovely area. The Dell, a small deep natural hollow, in the heart of the Alameda has a bridge across the centre covered by a combination of purple bougainvillea, Lantana and Golden Chalice Vine. Although the gardens were opened in 1816, it wasn’t completed until 8 years later. It was inaugurated on the 24th September 1842, and re-inaugurated 150 years later to the actual day. Lionel J Codali, grandson of Guiseppe Codali, made a donation for the two fountains to be refurbished, one from wrought iron and one from terracotta.
The Garrison Library is a great wedding location, being a magnificent 200 year old building housing many interesting archives and documents from as far back as 1704. It is located in the centre of Main Street, behind the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, you can also see the Scottish Church in the same square. A young Lieutenant named Drinkwater, having been in Gibraltar during the Great Siege, returned to Gibraltar as Captain Drinkwater and requested that the Garrison had a library to help alleviate boredom and provide recreation. Other buildings were added around it and a new wing in 1867, but the building is now as it was then, including the bookcases and some of the original furniture. Interestingly there is also the original ‘sand glass’ which was used to prevent gentlemen ‘hogging’ The Times newspaper. Also part of the construction was the premises on which the Gibraltar Chronicle was sited. Gibraltar’s ‘national’ newspaper was first printed as a garrison newsletter on the 4th May 1801. It is one of the oldest newspapers still in print in Europe and scored a world exclusive in October 1805 when it reported the victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Lord Nelson.
